As we walk through 21 days of prayer and fasting this new year, I want to remind us all of the warning Isaiah 58,
“It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves. Even while you fast, you keep oppressing your workers. 4 What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me. 5 You humble yourselves by going through the motions of penance, bowing your heads like reeds bending in the wind. You dress in burlap and cover yourselves with ashes. Is this what you call fasting? Do you really think this will please the Lord?
If we’re not careful, we can find ourselves going through the motions and checking everything off of the list for prayer and fasting; And never actually connect to the power of God through the process! Realize that fasting is simply a way to turn down the volume of the world, and turn up the voice of God. However and whatever your fasting this year, don’t focus as much on the sacrifice your making, as you are listening for the voice of the Holy Spirit in your life. My prayer is that as we listen, we hear the voice of God in this season like never before.
